Abstract:

This presentation will discuss finding the first job. Although the first job is based on a candidate’s potential and personality, all the other steps to performing a job search are universal. The search should really start after you begin your first semester of college. Some of the factors that need to be considered are:

  • Determine what do you want to do, research the industry and companies
  • Ascertain the barriers to entry
  • Develop experience (senior engineers, projects, co-op positions, internship)
  • Develop personal skills (mentor, network, career counselors, communication)
  • Develop presentation to sell yourself (resume, cover letter, interview, follow-up)

Once you find your job, start a new plan to focus on a career. Choose each job or assignment with a goal of personal development. It is important to be prepared to fail. This will be illustrated in a video.  The key is to believe in yourself, working hard, being flexible, volunteering, and accepting new challenges.
