Yards Brewery Tour and Tasting

As chemical engineers, we pride ourselves in the undeniable link of brewing beer and chemical engineering. Help us celebrate this brewing heritage on February 27, 2007 with a tour of the oldest and only surviving brewery within Philadelphia city limits. Yards Brewing Company, founded in Philadelphia in 1994, resurrected the brewery building on the corner of Hagert and Martha Streets in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia in 2001. The former Weisbrod and Hess Oriental Brewing Company operated from the same building until 1939. The 40,000 square foot facility enabled Yards to increase production to over 10,000 barrels per year.

In April 1995, Yards introduced Extra Special Ale at the Philadelphia Craft Brewers Festival. Local taverns began offering the ale in response to their experience at the festival. Shortly thereafter, Yards brought the return of cask ales to Philadelphia and beer engines began to arrive.  Yards rules most of the 20+ beer engines in the Philadelphia area. In 1998 and 2001, Yards won the Best of Philly Award for “Best Local Beer.”

Enjoy a tasting of Yards’ brews at Yards Brewery immediately following the tour.  Our beer tasting will continue at Johnny Brenda’s where Yards is on tap with other local beers. A light Mediterranean buffet dinner will follow.

Please visit the Yards Brewery website www.yardsbrewing.com for directions.  The Yards Brewery is easily accessible by public transportation (Septa Route 5 bus and Frankford EL). Johnny Brenda’s is located in close proximity to Yards. We  can arrange carpooling for members reaching Yards by public transportation.
