Energy-from-Waste Facility Tour
Please join us on Thursday, January 12th, for a tour of the Covanta Plymouth Renewable Energy LP.
It began commercial operation in February 1992 for the Waste System Authority of Eastern Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, which controls the waste flow for 22 municipalities. The facility processes municipal solid waste and uses it to generate renewable energy which is sold to Exelon. The facility is a fine example of how to use renewable energy to solve the energy issues facing us today.
Some technical details:
-
It is fired with Two 608 ton-per-day Steinmuller Gmbh reciprocating grate and water wall furnaces which burn trash.
-
Steam is generated at 650 pounds per square inch gauge/750°F at the superheater outlet
-
Electricity is generated by steam turbine generators with water cooling.
-
Cooling water is reused through cooling towers.
-
The unit has Flue gas scrubbers injecting lime, fabric filter baghouses, nitrogen oxide control, mercury control and continuous emissions monitoring (CEM) system for environmental protection.
-
Its capacity is 1,216 tons per day of Trash and generates 32 megawatts of electricity
