Abstract:
Facilities that produce bulk solids and industries or individuals that consume them will often struggle to define what quality means to them. Particles are more difficult to characterize than solid objects, liquids, or gases, and particle attributes unrelated to chemical composition may significantly affect the usefulness or value of a bulk solid. This presentation will illustrate some of the common challenges faced by producers and consumers of bulk solids, and discuss some of the common concepts and strategies employed to address them.
Biography:
Timothy A. Bell retired from DuPont in 2020 as a Senior Engineering Fellow. He led DuPont’s competency in solids handling and provided consulting and laboratory testing to DuPont’s business units, central R&D, and key customers. That work took the form of new process design, equipment selection, troubleshooting, and particle product development.
Tim has 12 patents and more than 50 conference, magazine, and journal publications. He is the past chair of the ASTM committee governing the testing of bulk solids for handling purposes, and is active in international efforts in this field. Tim is an adjunct professor at the University of Delaware, teaching particle transport and senior design. He holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan, a M.B.A. from West Virginia University, and a P.E. license in Delaware. Since retirement from DuPont, Tim has consulted with numerous companies, most often on solids handling process design.
