Abstract:
This lecture will cover the following:

  • Crude fractionation involves the complex subject of multi-component fractionation. This is a subject that is not well understood in the refinery and process industry.
  • Fractionation of crude oil also involves the complexity of adjusting the pumparound circuit flows, to optimize heat recovery, and to maximize fractionation efficiency.
  • Steam stripping of diesel oil side-stream, atmospheric tower bottoms, and atmospheric gas oil cut, is likely the single largest factor affecting refinery profitability.

During this one hour session, my intent is to introduce the complexity of these problems, so that attendees can run plant field tests and draw their own conclusions.

Understanding lies in the unit, not in the office.

Biography:
Norman Lieberman has been practicing Chemical Engineering in petroleum refineries since 1964. His major contribution to the industry is to demonstrate field troubleshooting techniques to young refinery process engineers. He holds Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in 1964 and Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University in 1965. He has worked with Amoco Oil (now part of BP) from 1964 thru 1980 and GHR Energy in Norco, La from 1980 thru 1986. During this period, he was engaged in Process Design; Technical Service Support; Operating Management; and Fire Troubleshooting. Upon the closure of the GHR Refinery in 1983, he became the plant manager, and finally V.P. of planning.

Mr. Lieberman has instructed over 850+ seminars dealing with refinery troubleshooting from 1986 to present. Over 19,000 engineers and technicians has attended his seminars which has been presented to a number of refineries (e.g. Exxon; Shell; BP; Total; Chevron; Repsol (Spain); Sasol (South Africa); HPCL BPCL and IOCL (India); ConocoPhillips (Indonesia); Valero; Caltex (Australia); Ras Gas (Qatar); Syncrude and Suncor (Canada), etc. He has executed scores of revamp designs for refinery process units such as Crude Distillation; Vacuum Distillation; Visbreakers; Alky Units; Hydro-desulfurization Units; FCU Fractionators; Gas Recovery Plants; Sulfur Plants; and Amine Systems. He acted as Expert Witness and also did Environmental Consulting.

Mr. Lieberman has ten technical books dealing with process operations and has published approximately 100 articles in the previous 50 years in journals (e.g. Oil & Gas Journal; Hydrocarbon Processing; Chemical Engineering Progress; Petroleum Technical Quarterly; and Chemical Engineering). All of Mr. Lieberman’s articles are based on first-hand operating, field troubleshooting, and process design experiences. Some are co-authored, the majority are solely by Mr. Lieberman.

Mr. Lieberman is the 2018 recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by Hydrocarbon Processing.
