Abstract:
Typical training sessions for solids handling systems focus almost exclusively on permanent silo structures. Many plants have no silos but handle bulk solids extensively. This session will take the basics of solids flow and conveying and extend them to the great variety of methods to store and logistically transport bulk materials, including bags, boxes, drums, bulk bags (FIBCs), portable bins, bulk pneumatic trailers, and ISO shipping containers.  While some of the same considerations apply to each type of container, there are unique aspects that can make a particular container a good or bad choice from a logistical or solids handling standpoint. For example, drums are cheap to fill but costly and difficult to empty and dispose of, while ISO shipping containers offer the lowest cost overseas transportation and least packaging waste but potentially the greatest capital investment to unload.

Biography:
Timothy A. Bell retired in 2020 from DuPont as a Senior Engineering Fellow. He led DuPont’s competency in solids handling and provided consulting and laboratory testing to DuPont’s business units, central R&D, and key customers. That work took the form of new process design, equipment selection, troubleshooting, and particle product development.

Tim has 12 patents and more than 50 conference, magazine, and journal publications. He is the past chair of the ASTM committee governing the testing of bulk solids for handling purposes, and is active in international efforts in this field. Tim is an adjunct professor at the University of Delaware, teaching particle transport and senior design. He holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan, a M.B.A. from West Virginia University, and a P.E. license in Delaware.

Since retirement from DuPont, Tim has consulted with numerous companies, most often on solids handling process design.
