AstraZeneca’s U.S. Supply Site, located in Newark, Delaware, opened in 1971 and now currently employs approximately 400 people. One of the first products produced at this facility was the popular antacid Mylanta. This 145-acre, 650,000 sq. ft. facility houses some of the most advanced pharmaceutical production and technical support in the nation.
Products formulated and packaged at this location include cardiovascular, oncology, infection, respiratory, gastrointestinal, anesthetics, and neuroscience treatments. The supply facility also serves as a major distribution center, shipping 56 million units of product each year to customers primarily on the East Coast. The most well-known products produced here are currently are SEROQUEL® (quetiapine fumarate) and ARIMIDEX® (anastrozole). SEROQUEL is a treatment for bipolar disease and major depressive disorder, while ARIMIDEX is used as a treatment for breast cancer.
The commitment to modernization and expansion at this facility has been ongoing since its inception. The Newark Supply Site was awarded the ENERGY STAR as a manufacturing plant for two consecutive years (2008 and 2009). This award resulted from site improvements implemented to reduce energy usage and CO2 emissions, an AstraZeneca global goal for 2010. The site also received two prestigious awards from the National Safety Council.
