Abstract:

Lightning Protection is becoming a necessity for any and all industries across the world. The rate, frequency and strength of lightning strikes along with storms are increasing. Areas that do not normally experience a large number of lightning strikes are being hit more often and areas that do usually see major storms and heavy lightning are being hit harder and longer. The North eastern United States and Europe have seen an increased number of lightning strikes measurably in the last few years.

Facility lightning protection is increasingly important, first because electronics are more susceptible to the secondary effects of lightning, even when properly grounded, and second because the incidence of lightning is increasing as the globe follows a warming trend.

This training session is developed to help professional engineers further understand the phenomena of lightning and how strikes, and their associated damage, to chemical and manufacturing facilities is controllable and preventable.

Biography:

Mr. Lanzoni has over 26 years of experience in the lightning protection industry. He has conducted numerous site inspections of industrial and commercial facilities, including chemical plants, refineries, petroleum storage facilities, water treatment plants, data centers, power generating stations, tower sites, substations and NASA facilities. Mr. Lanzoni has also published numerous technical papers regarding electrical grounding and lightning protection. He is a member of the following national technical committees:

  • API RP 545, Lightning Protection of Aboveground Storage Tanks for Flammable or Combustible Liquids
  • NFPA standard 780, Installation of Lightning Protection Systems
  • API RP 2003, Protection Against Ignitions Arising Out of Static, Lightning and Stray Currents
  • NFPA committee for the National Electrical Grounding Research Project

Mr. Lanzoni has over 31 years of experience with manufacturers of engineered equipment. He has an Engineering degree from Lehigh University and a Master’s degree from University of San Diego. He has also coached numerous youth baseball teams.
